Shooting for more: Freshman center builds confidence on the court

1/12/2026 2:53:00 PM

Emma Beaver has unlocked new potential on the basketball court, thanks to encouragement from Coach Reena Haliburton. As a center, Beaver was used to focusing on defense and rebounds, but Haliburton challenged her to expand her skill set -- dribbling, shooting threes and making a bigger impact on the floor.
"I want to play well for my team, but I'm also less afraid of making a mistake, thanks to Coach," said Beaver, a freshman majoring in Education. "I know she won't yell at me, and that's really helped my confidence."

E. Beaver AS2Beaver is challenged by the fast-paced game and shot clock which is a big difference from playing at the high school level, but she's also learning to enjoy the quickness and excitement of college basketball.

Coach Haliburton is proud of how she's risen to the occasion. "Emma is the definition of mentally and physically tough. She works hard, she's disciplined and knows her responsibilities on the court. Emma is our uplifter, no matter the score or how much she plays. She's a blessing to this team."

Haliburton recalled how Emma came off the bench against Grace College and scored a career high 23 points and 15 rebounds. "My goal for Emma is getting her on the all-conference team before she graduates at IUC!" her coach said.

Beaver's journey to IU Columbus was a natural fit. A Columbus native and graduate of North High School, she was already familiar with the campus and her sisters attended here. After going to last year's Athletics Open House and touring campus, she embraced the chance to earn and IU degree while continuing the sport she loves. "I've been playing basketball my Emma Beaverwhole life. I didn't want to be without it," she said.

She's also doing well academically, especially enjoying her freshman seminar class for Education majors, with instructor Rob Darringer and weekly ice breakers led by Peer Mentor Marina Soto. "It's been great getting to know people and working through classwork together," Emma added.

Looking ahead to spring, Beaver plans to compete on the Crimson Pride track and field team, throwing shotput and discus, which she also did in high school.

As she continues to embrace every opportunity, sharpen her skills, and put in the hard work, one thing is certain--Emma Beaver's impact at IU Columbus is only just beginning.

Cheer on Emma and the Crimson Pride! Women's Basketball plays at home (NexusPark Circle K Fieldhouse) on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 6 p.m., vs. IU Kokomo.
