Paul Hafen

Paul S. Hafen is a passionate track and field coach and exercise science expert with over a decade of experience developing athletes across multiple disciplines. Originally from the western United States, Paul has coached high school track and field in Nevada, Utah, and Indiana, working with athletes in distance events, high jump, and pole vault.

Since beginning his coaching career in 2011, Paul has guided student-athletes to all-state finishes in each of the three states he’s coached, demonstrating a consistent ability to nurture talent and elevate performance. His coaching philosophy centers on long-term development, emphasizing injury prevention, consistency, and dedication as the keys to sustained success.

In addition to his extensive coaching background, Paul brings firsthand competitive experience as a Track & Field All-American in the Master’s Division, specializing in the 3000m and 5000m. He also achieved a top-20 finish at the Phoenix Marathon, underscoring his lifelong commitment to athletic excellence.

Paul holds a Ph.D. in Exercise Sciences from Brigham Young University, earned in 2018. His academic expertise complements his coaching, allowing him to apply evidence-based training methods that prioritize athlete well-being and performance.

Paul joined IU Columbus in 2024 as the Head Coach for Men’s and Women’s Track and Field, specializing in vertical jumps. He brings with him a deep-rooted belief that in track and field where athletes can get back every ounce of effort they pour into their training.
