Robert Newlin

Robert Newlin is an experienced multi-sport coach and dedicated mentor who brings over a decade of coaching knowledge to IU Columbus. A native of Indiana, Robert earned his Bachelor of Science in Child and Youth Development with an emphasis in Education from Milligan College (now Milligan University) in 2009. During his collegiate career, he competed as a thrower in track and field, specializing in shot put, discus, javelin, hammer, and weight throw.

Robert’s coaching journey spans more than 11 years and includes roles in high school women’s soccer, softball, and track and field, as well as middle school football, travel baseball, and basketball. He also spent two years coaching throwers at the junior level (ages 7–18), and two years at the high school level before stepping into the collegiate ranks. He joined IU Columbus in 2024 as the Throws Coach for the men’s and women’s track and field teams.

Robert believes in developing the whole athlete—physically, mentally, and emotionally. His coaching philosophy emphasizes becoming a student of the sport, putting in daily work, and creating a positive and safe environment where athletes can thrive and reach their full potential. He takes pride in building strong relationships with his athletes and helping them grow both on and off the field.

In addition to coaching, Robert brings a deep understanding of youth development and education, which supports his mission to mentor and guide student-athletes through their academic and athletic journeys.
