In a challenging match, IU Columbus suffered a 2-0 defeat against Rio Grande on Thursday, October 10. The loss dropped the Crimson Pride to 2-7-1 overall and 0-4-0 in conference play.

From the opening whistle, IU Columbus found themselves on the back foot against a relentless Rio Grande attack. The visitors dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities, outshooting the home team by a staggering 23-0 margin.

Despite the onslaught, IU Columbus' defense held firm for much of the first half. Goalkeeper Mallory Gilley put in a heroic performance, making several crucial saves to keep her team in the game. However, the pressure finally told in the 44th minute when Rio Grande's Sara Estrada Fernandez broke the deadlock with an unassisted goal just before halftime.

Coming out for the second half, IU Columbus hoped to mount a comeback. But their plans were quickly derailed as Rio Grande's Jitske De Muijnk doubled the lead just four minutes after the restart. De Muijnk was a constant threat throughout the match, recording five shots with three on target

As the game wore on, IU Columbus struggled to gain a foothold. Unable to register a single shot or corner kick, the team's offensive woes were laid bare. The midfield, led by Lily Campbell and Nataly Cruz, fought valiantly to stem the tide, but Rio Grande's control of the game was absolute.

In the closing stages, frustration began to show. Madison Merritt received a yellow card in the 81st minute, adding to the team's difficulties. Despite this, IU Columbus continued to battle until the final whistle, with defenders Jada Day and Rebecca Valdez working tirelessly to limit the damage.

Looking Ahead: IU Columbus will need to regroup quickly as they search for their first conference win. The Crimson Pride kickoff again Saturday, for Senior Night, at 4:30 pm.
