Men's Soccer Concludes Season with 1-0 Loss at Shawnee State

The IU Columbus men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 road decision against Shawnee State in Thursday's conference matchup. The loss moves the Crimson Pride to 4-11-2 overall and 0-7-1 in conference play.

After a scoreless first half, Shawnee State broke through in the 74th minute when João Coqueti Léo found the back of the net off an assist from Guillermo Conejo Martin for what proved to be the game-winner.

The Crimson Pride generated four shots, with three testing Shawnee State goalkeeper Eric Green. Logan Puls, Christian Cardoso, and goalkeeper Jacob Kasarda each recorded shots on target for IU Columbus. Kasarda turned in a strong performance in goal with 10 saves against persistent pressure from Shawnee State's attack, which produced 20 total shots with 11 on target. The hosts also dominated set pieces, earning 14 corner kicks to IU Columbus' single corner attempt.

In a physical contest that saw seven yellow cards issued, IU Columbus' Cyuzuzo Ndayambaje received a caution in the 23rd minute and Kevin Cruz was booked in the 77th minute. Five Shawnee State players also received yellow cards in the match. The teams combined for 21 total fouls, with IU Columbus called for 8 and Shawnee State 13.

The defeat closes IU Columbus' season. 

Reflecting on the season, Athletic Director Zach McClellan acknowledged the challenges faced while maintaining optimism about the program's direction. "Men's soccer faced many challenges this season. We look forward to learning from this year and building toward the future. A special thanks to our seniors, Jon Michael Bright and Angel Roque for helping us build our program. Also, we've had some young players demonstrate they have the skills to play at this level in Christian Cardoso and Jonathan Silva, among several others."
