BARBOURVILLE - IU Columbus suffered a difficult 91-58 defeat at the hands of Union Commonwealth (Ky.) on Tuesday afternoon. The team opened with energy but ultimately struggled to get their offense going, shooting just 32.1% from the field and 30.8% from three-point range.
The offense was led by freshman, Amaya Collins, who contributed 18 points and three steals, shooting 5-14 from the field and going 6-8 from the free-throw line. Collins's scoring and defensive efforts kept the Crimson Pride competitive, especially in the first quarter, where the team put up 19 points. Sydney Waldron and Gwen Higdon provided solid support, adding 12 and 11 points, respectively. Waldron was efficient from beyond the arc, hitting 2 of her 4 three-point attempts. Higdon's performance also stood out, as she made four of her seven shots and was 3-4 from the line.
Despite these efforts, Union's powerful offense and rebounding dominance became difficult to counter. The hosts surged ahead in the second quarter, outscoring IU Columbus 21-11 and extending their lead further in the second half. Union's standout player, Madison Brady, scored a game-high 34 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, leading her team to a commanding win.
Despite the best efforts of Amaya Collins and the rest of the Crimson Pride squad, they were ultimately overmatched by the offensive firepower of Union's team. This loss drops IU Columbus to 0-3 on the season, and they will look to rebound in their next game, Monday, November 11 at Saint Xavier University at 5:00 pm.
