EVANSVILLE, IN — The IU Columbus women's basketball team fell to Division I University of Evansville 84-52 at the Ford Center on Tuesday morning. Despite solid individual efforts, the Crimson Pride struggled with turnovers and shooting efficiency, leading to a loss.
The game started competitively, with IU Columbus scoring the first basketball and staying within striking distance for much of the first quarter. Freshman guard Amaya Collins led the team early, scoring 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting. The Crimson Pride trailed by just three, 21-18, at the end of the first period, thanks to Collins' strong play and some solid free-throw shooting.
However, the second quarter was a different story. Evansville's defense ramped up, forcing IU Columbus into difficult shots, and the Crimson Pride struggled to convert, shooting just 2-of-9 from the field. The Purple Aces capitalized, building a commanding 39-26 lead at halftime, outscoring IU Columbus 18-8 in the second period.
In the second half, IU Columbus faced an uphill battle. The third quarter was particularly challenging, as Evansville poured in 24 points while the Crimson Pride managed only 6. Jacelyn Starks was the bright spot in the second half, finishing the game with 14 points and 5 assists, but her efforts weren't enough to overcome the Purple Aces' relentless attack.
Evansville dominated the boards, grabbing 49 rebounds compared to just 28 for IU Columbus, including 24 offensive rebounds. This disparity led to numerous second-chance opportunities for the Aces, which they converted into points and fast-break opportunities.
Another highlight of today's match-up came from the bench, where Olivia Embry scored her first collegiate points, a 2-pointer, in just one minute of play, showing some spark in limited action.
Despite the loss, Collins and Starks both showed they can compete at this level. Both finishing with 14 points and 2 assists a piece. Sophomore Abby Fleetwood added 7 points and 6 rebounds in a solid all-around performance. However, the Crimson Pride couldn't overcome their shooting struggles or sustain any momentum as Evansville continued to keep their foot on the gas throughout the game.
Evansville, on the other hand, was led by Maggie Hartwig, who posted a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. The Aces were also fueled by a balanced attack from players like Kaiden Kreinhagen (15 points) and Camryn Runner (12 points), along with strong free-throw shooting (21-26 overall).
IU Columbus will look to regroup over Christmas break, returning to action and conference play, January 4 at Circle K Fieldhouse at NexusPark. Tip-off is set for 3:00 PM.
