In a tightly contested match, the IU Columbus Crimson Pride suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to WVU Tech in their conference opener on Wednesday, September 25, 2024. The loss drops the Crimson Pride's record to 2-3-1 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play.
From the opening whistle, IU Columbus found themselves under relentless pressure from a WVU Tech side determined to dominate possession and create scoring opportunities. The visitors unleashed a barrage of 21 shots throughout the match, with 13 finding their way on target. However, the scoreline remained deadlocked at 0-0 for the majority of the game, thanks in large part to the efforts of Crimson Pride goalkeeper
Mallory Gilley.
Gilley, building on her impressive 14-save performance in the previous match against Georgetown College, once again stood tall between the posts. The goalkeeper made an astounding 12 saves, repeatedly denying WVU Tech's forwards and keeping her team in the contest despite the onslaught.
The Crimson Pride's defense, led by the likes of
Billie Puente,
Madison Merritt, and
Logan Bierman, battled to keep the WVU Tech attacks at tide. Their efforts were crucial in keeping the match scoreless deep into the second half.
However, the breakthrough finally came for WVU Tech in the 61st minute. A penalty was awarded to the visitors, and Stheisy Lemus stepped up to convert the spot-kick, breaking the deadlock and putting WVU Tech ahead 1-0.
Despite falling behind, IU Columbus refused to give up. The team pushed forward in search of an equalizer, with Cyanne St. Bernard providing their lone shot on goal. Unfortunately, the WVU Tech defense held firm, and the Crimson Pride were unable to find the back of the net.
The Crimson Pride will look to regroup and prepare for their next match. They return to action on Monday, September 30, at 4:30pm, where they will face Ohio Christian University.
