KOKOMO, Ind. — The IU Columbus Crimson Pride faced a tough challenge in their road game against IU Kokomo on Saturday, ultimately falling 109-68. Despite moments of promise, the Crimson Pride struggled to contain a red-hot Cougars team that delivered a dominant performance in front of their home crowd.
From the opening tip, IU Columbus battled to keep pace with Kokomo's efficient offense and strong rebounding presence. Sophomore, Owen Law shone brightly for the Crimson Pride, tallying a team-high 23 points while pulling down 9 rebounds. His all-around effort helped keep IU Columbus within striking distance through much of the first half.
Despite Law's performance, the Cougars' sharpshooting proved too much to overcome. Kokomo's Evan Kretz erupted for 31 points, connecting on an incredible 9 of 17 shots from beyond the arc. Max Newman provided another offensive weapon for Kokomo, finishing with 19 points and 13 rebounds.
The Crimson Pride found success in their perimeter shooting, hitting 37.5% of their three-point attempts, led by Bobby Wonnell (9 points) and Ben Sylva (13 points). However, Kokomo's dominance in the paint and on the glass limited second-chance opportunities for the visitors.
Key contributions came from IU Columbus reserves Jack Fischvogt and Chase Ridao, who combined for 11 points off the bench. The team also showcased strong free-throw shooting, converting 80% of their attempts.
In the end, Kokomo's depth and efficiency proved to be the difference. The Cougars outscored IU Columbus 63-36 in the second half, using a 26-assist performance to keep the Crimson Pride defense on its heels.
The Crimson Pride will return to the court determined to bounce back and continue building toward success. Their next matchup offers an opportunity to turn the page and regroup as they focus on refining their play.
IU Columbus moves to 1-15 (0-4 in conference play) with the loss, while IU Kokomo improves to 12-4 (3-1 conference). The Crimson Pride close out their stretch of road games with an RSC match-up against IU Southeast on Tuesday (Jan. 14) at 5:30 PM. The team will look to end the trip on a high note, building some momentum before returning home Saturday (Jan. 18), where RSC conference play continues.
