RICHMOND, Ind. – The IU Columbus women's basketball team put up a valiant effort but fell short in a 79-71 loss to IU East on Saturday afternoon. Despite a strong second-half push, the Crimson Pride were unable to overcome an early deficit.
IU East jumped out to a commanding 26-12 lead in the first quarter, but IU Columbus responded with a more balanced attack in the second and third quarters. The Crimson Pride outscored the Red Wolves 22-20 in both the third and fourth quarters but could not close the gap completely.
Jacelyn Starks led IU Columbus with a team-high 23 points, hitting four three-pointers while shooting 8-of-20 from the field. She provided a much-needed spark, keeping the Crimson Pride in contention. Amaya Collins and Abby Fleetwood each added 12 points, with Fleetwood also grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds for a double-double.
Isyss Donelson delivered an all-around solid performance, contributing 15 points, seven assists, and three rebounds, while Tatum McFarland chipped in five points off the bench. IU Columbus finished with a 34.3% shooting percentage and a respectable 39.1% from three-point range.
The Red Wolves capitalized on their inside presence, as Sally Mortensen led the way with 24 points and nine rebounds. Trinity Archey provided a significant boost off the bench with 20 points, while Taylor Farris contributed 11 points and nine assists. IU East controlled the rebounding battle, pulling down 48 boards compared to IU Columbus' 41, which proved to be a key factor in their victory.
IU Columbus (2-17, 0-10) will aim to bounce in their next contest. They're back in action, on the road, for another another RSC match-up on Tuesday (Feb. 4) at Oakland City University. Tip-off is set for 8:30 PM CST.
