The IU Columbus Crimson Pride traveled down south to Georgia and South Carolina this weekend for a three-game series against Concordia University (MI), facing early challenges before rallying for a hard-fought victory in the final game. After struggling to generate offense in the first two matchups, IU Columbus bounced back with a determined effort, notching them their first win of the season and proving their potential as they head into conference play in the coming weeks.
Game 1: Slow Start Leads to 9-1 Loss
The season opener saw IU Columbus struggle to generate offense against a strong Concordia pitching performance. The Cardinals took control early, scoring in five different innings to build a comfortable lead.
Carson McNulty provided the lone RBI for the Crimson Pride with a groundout in the fourth inning that brought Lucas Slager home. Slager and Cyrus Robinson each recorded two hits, while Robinson added a double. On the mound, Jackson Gilcrest (0-1) started for IU Columbus, allowing three runs (two earned) over 2.2 innings before the bullpen took over.
Game 2: Crimson Pride Shut Down in 8-0 Defeat
IU Columbus faced another tough challenge in the second game, as Concordia's pitching stifled their lineup. The Cardinals methodically built their lead, scoring in four different innings while keeping IU Columbus off the board. The Crimson Pride managed just three hits in the game, struggling to find offensive momentum.
Defensively, the pitching staff worked to limit damage, but Concordia's timely hitting proved too much to overcome. Tarron White and John Codner contributed defensive highlights, but the team couldn't capitalize on limited opportunities at the plate.
Game 3: Crimson Pride Rallies for First Win, 6-4
Determined to avoid the sweep, IU Columbus bounced back in game three with a strong all-around performance. The Crimson Pride's offense finally broke through, putting up six runs and showing grit late in the game to secure their first victory of the season.
A big fourth inning sparked IU Columbus, with Carson McNulty and Cyrus Robinson leading the charge. The pitching staff delivered a much-needed strong outing, holding Concordia to just four runs and shutting them down in the late innings. The defense also tightened up, making key plays to preserve the win.
This victory gives the Crimson Pride momentum as they look ahead to their next series. After shaking off early-season struggles, IU Columbus proved they can compete and will aim to build on their hard-fought success moving forward.
The Crimson Pride are scheduled to play Goshen College Monday (Feb. 24) and Tuesday (Feb. 25) at home for another three-game series. Games will start at 1:00 PM both days and will be played at Ceraland.
