Softball Earns Split Against 2nd-Place Oakland City

COLUMBUS, Ind. -  IU Columbus Softball battled through a rollercoaster of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon against Oakland City, earning a gritty 2-1 win in Game 1 before falling 10-2 in a tough Game 2 loss.

Game 1: IU Columbus 2, Oakland City 1

In a tightly contested pitcher's duel, IU Columbus secured a 2-1 victory behind Erica Henry's complete game performance. The Crimson Pride struck first in the third inning when Hannah Taylor scored on Isabel Johnson's RBI single. Oakland City evened the score in the sixth when Katherine Hibbitt connected for a solo home run, but IU Columbus immediately responded in the bottom half of the inning with Mallory Shelton's go-ahead solo homer. Henry limited Oakland City to six hits while stranding nine runners on base, working out of several jams to preserve the win. The Crimson Pride defense played error-free softball behind their pitcher to secure their 11th win of the season.

Game 2: Oakland City 10, IU Columbus 2

The momentum didn't carry over for IU Columbus in the nightcap, as Oakland City's offense erupted for a 10-2 run-rule victory. After falling behind 1-0 in the second inning, the Crimson Pride found themselves in an 8-0 hole following a seven-run fourth inning by the Mighty Oaks. Oakland City collected 11 hits, including four doubles, with Emma Williams delivering a two-run single and Bailey Cox adding a two-run hit during the big inning. IU Columbus showed fight by scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth on Emma Chism's sacrifice fly and Gracie Holok's RBI double, but Oakland City added two more runs in the fifth to secure the run-rule win. Justice Cash took the loss for the Crimson Pride, allowing eight runs in 3.1 innings.

Looking Ahead

With the split, the Crimson Pride moved to 12-22 overall and 9-13 in conference play as they push deeper into their 2025 season. Now gearing up for a demanding stretch, IU Columbus is set to hit the road for six games this week, beginning with a crucial doubleheader as they aim to claim a spot in the RSC tournament. The Crimson Pride kick off the week on Tuesday (Apr. 15) at SMWC. The first game is scheduled to start at 3:00 PM.
