Crimson Pride Falter Late, Lose Series to Shawnee State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Weather forced a change in the schedule as the IUC / Shawnee State three game series, scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Portsmouth, Ohio, was move to Sunday and Monday in Indiana. The River States Conference matchup became a doubleheader on Sunday in Kokomo, followed by a single game at Cera Sports Park on Monday.

Game 1 Sunday, April 8 (9 inning game)
Shawnee State scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings to lead 3-1. The Bears added two more in the fifth make it 5-1 before the Crimson Pride offense came to life.  

Cyrus Robinson led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and proceeded to steal second. Grayson Roll singled and Robinson moved to third. Trey VanMeter followed with a 4-pitch walk to load the bases. After an infield flyout, Gavin Lash worked a walk to force in Robinson. Wyatt Sutton singled in Roll, and the bases were still loaded. Garrett Thurman came in to pinch-hit, and he was plunked with a 2-0 fastball to bring VanMeter home. Blake Borkhardt came in as a pinch-hitter, and he walked to bring Lash across home plate, tying the score 5-5. The bases were left loaded, however, and the game moved into the seventh.

The Bears scored two runs in the seventh inning, and added two more in the 8th. The Crimson Pride offense was unable to put anything together in the late innings and Shawnee State took the opener 9-5.

Game 2 Sunday, April 8 (7 inning game)
IU Columbus got on the board with a one-out solo homer by Trey VanMeter to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Shawnee State answered with one run in the second inning, and followed that up with three more runs in the third, making the score 4-1.

Lash led off the fifth with a double and Ty Nicholson drove him in with an RBI single. Cyrus Robinson came in as the courtesy runner for Nicholson, and he advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt by the pitcher. Roll then grounded out to second, scoring Robinson to cut the lead to 4-3.

Shawnee State put up six runs in the top of the sixth behind a pair of 2-run homers by Diego Mendoza and Nolan Austin, stretching their lead to 10-3. The Crimson Pride sixth inning looked promising as VanMeter doubled, Carson McNultey singled and Thurman walked, loading the bases with nobody out. Avery Seegers grounded out to third, scoring VanMeter. Lash singled McNulty home to make the score 10-5. The rally ended there, and a scoreless seventh gave the Bears a sweep of the doubleheader.

Monday, April 9 (9 inning game)
The Crimson Pride returned to their home field at CERA Sports Park to finish up their series with Shawnee State. Grayson Roll started on the mound for IU Columbus and threw six innings on the day. Wyatt Haupt was equally effective as the Bears' starting pitcher. After four scoreless innings, Shawnee State put up three runs in the fifth on a solo home run by Mason Reid, followed by a double and two singles.

The Crimson Pride answered in the bottom of the inning as Thurman doubled and Lash walked. Thurman was picked off at second for the first out, but Aidan Sheetz singled and Wes McNeff walked to load the bases. Brett Poindexter lifted a sacrifice fly to right to make the score 3-1 after five innings.

Roll put down the Bears in order in the top of the sixth, and the offense came through in the bottom half. Sutton got the ball rolling with 1-out single. McNulty singled and Lash doubled to score Sutton. Sheetz came through with a 2-out, 2-run single to give the Crimson Pride the lead 4-3 after six innings.

Carter Reitz came on in relief of Roll, and the score remained 4-3 after a scoreless seventh. Larry Drake hit a home run to lead off the eighth inning for the Bears. Mendoza hit a 1-out double, and Blaze Schultz came in to pitch for IUC. He gave up a walk and threw a wild pitch, putting runners on second and third; however, he was able to strike out the next two batters and end the threat.

McNulty led off the bottom of the eighth with a double, and Thurman smoked a long 2-run homer to put the Crimson Pride up 6-4 going into the ninth.

The ninth inning started off with three consecutive walks to give the Bears the bases loaded with nobody out. They went on to score two runs to tie the game at 6. IUC failed to score in the bottom of the ninth, sending it into extra innings. After a pair of singles, Reid hit a 2-run double to put the visitors up 8-6. The Crimson Pride went down in order in the tenth, and Shawnee State completed a three game sweep.
