Women's Basketball Notches First Win in Program History

COLUMBUS, Ind. - History was made at Circle K Fieldhouse at NexusPark on Thursday night as the IU Columbus women's basketball team captured the program's first-ever victory, defeating Kuyper College 72-53 in front of an electric home crowd. The win also marked the team's first victory of the 2024-25 season, setting off a celebration years in the making.

Led by freshman Amaya Collins' stellar all-around performance of 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists, the Crimson Pride dominated with a balanced attack and suffocating defense. Collins not only proved she could be a facilitator, but she could also consistently get to the free-throw line, and knock down her shots.

This was a special moment for the IU Columbus program, and our community. The energy in the gym tonight was incredible!

The Crimson Pride's defensive pressure proved to be the difference-maker, forcing 22 turnovers while recording 12 steals as a team. Sydney Waldron (13 points, 3 steals, and 8 rebounds) and Jacelyn Starks (15 points, 5 rebounds. and 5 steals) joined Collins in double figures, while Abby Fleetwood controlled the paint with 14 points and 7 rebounds.

IU Columbus showcased impressive ball movement throughout the night, recording 9 assists on 23 made field goals. The team also excelled at getting to the free throw line, converting 21 of 31 attempts (67.7%).

Despite a strong 21-point effort from Kuyper's Aniya Fisher, the Crimson Pride's depth and defensive intensity proved too much to overcome. IU Columbus led from start to finish, bringing the enthusiastic home crowd to their feet as the final buzzer sounded on this historic victory.

The win marks a significant milestone for IU Columbus athletics as the basketball program continues to build its foundation in its inaugural season.

The Crimson Pride will look to build on this momentum as they continue their historic first season. The team returns to action Thursday, November 21, on the road, at Georgetown College. Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm.
