COLUMBUS, Ind. – Despite a strong effort and flashes of brilliance, the IU Columbus men's basketball team was unable to overcome a hot-shooting Lourdes squad on Thursday night, falling 107-76 at Circle K Fieldhouse at NexusPark. While the result wasn't what the Crimson Pride had hoped for, the team showed resilience and promise against a formidable opponent.
IU Columbus was paced by a stellar performance from Deante Luster, who poured in 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including two three-pointers, while going a perfect 5-of-5 from the free-throw line. Luster also added 4 rebounds and 2 assists, leading the Crimson Pride's offensive attack.
Damontae Thompson contributed a strong all-around effort with 15 points and a team-high 5 rebounds, while Bobby Wonnell knocked down three triples on his way to 11 points, energizing the crowd with his sharp shooting.
The Crimson Pride moved the ball well, recording 11 assists on 31 made baskets. However, Lourdes' efficiency and defensive pressure limited IU Columbus' opportunities, as the visiting team forced 5 turnovers and controlled the rebounding battle with a 25-17 advantage.
Lourdes showcased incredible offensive efficiency, shooting 88.2% from the field (45-of-51) and converting all 15 of their free-throw attempts. The Crimson Pride struggled to contain Lourdes' top scorers, including Shaunn Monroe and Derrell Jones, who each tallied 24 points. Monroe also led a strong defensive effort with 5 steals.
The Crimson Pride will use this game as a learning opportunity as they continue to grow and develop as a program. With Luster and Thompson leading the way, the team has the pieces to bounce back and make strides in the season ahead.
IU Columbus returns to action on Wednesday, November 20, at home where they will face IU South Bend. Tip-off is set for 6:00 pm.
