PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The IU Columbus women's basketball team faced a challenging outing against Shawnee State, falling 100-33 in a road contest. Despite battling against one of the top teams in the River States Conference, the Crimson Pride struggled to find their rhythm offensively and defensively.
The game started on a tough note for IU Columbus, as they managed just two points in the first quarter while Shawnee State put up 31 points. Although the Crimson Pride regrouped in the second quarter with 14 points, the halftime deficit proved insurmountable, with Shawnee State holding a commanding 48-16 lead.
Freshman guard Amaya Collins led IU Columbus with 10 points, hitting two three-pointers and demonstrating perseverance against the stiff Shawnee defense. Sophomore guard Tatum McFarland also contributed 10 points, including two from beyond the arc, while forward Trinity Tatlock led the team with seven rebounds.
Shawnee State showcased their dominance throughout the game, with Emily Maynard scoring a game-high 24 points, draining seven three-pointers. Cianna Gloster recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Jada Johnson added 13 points and seven rebounds off the bench. The Bears' depth was evident, with 12 players contributing to the scoring column.
IU Columbus struggled to match Shawnee State's efficiency, shooting just 22.6% from the field compared to Shawnee State's 53.2%. The Bears also dominated the boards, out-rebounding IU Columbus 55-18, and displayed their passing prowess with 24 assists as a team.
IU Columbus (2-16, 0-7 RSC) will use this game as a learning experience as they prepare for their next River States Conference match-up. Their next stop in this weekend's road trip will be at #11 University of Rio Grande. Tip-off is set for 3:00 PM.
