Women's Basketball Falls to Brescia

COLUMBUS, Ind.— The IU Columbus Crimson Pride women's basketball team faced a challenging matchup on Saturday, falling to the Brescia Bearcats 74-45 in front of a home crowd at Circle K Fieldhouse. Despite a spirited effort and standout performances from key players, IU Columbus (2-11, 0-2) couldn't overcome Brescia's experience and efficiency.

The Crimson Pride started the game with energy, but Brescia's dominant first quarter set the tone. The Bearcats outscored IU Columbus 26-15 in the opening frame, taking advantage of second-chance opportunities and controlling the paint. By halftime, Brescia had built a 42-26 lead.

The third quarter saw IU Columbus battle back with determination, as they managed to score 14 points, led by freshman Jacelyn Starks, who contributed a team-high 17 points on the afternoon. However, the Bearcats' relentless defensive pressure proved too much, and IU Columbus was held to just five points in the final period.

Rebounding and offensive struggles defined the game for IU Columbus, as Brescia's size and physicality in the paint gave the Bearcats a decisive 56-32 advantage on the boards. Additionally, the Crimson Pride struggled with their shooting, converting just 21.9% of their field goal attempts and 20.8% from beyond the arc.

The Crimson Pride will regroup as they prepare for their next contest. The team looks forward to continuing conference play with hopes of improving both their record and execution.

Key Crimson Pride Performers:

  • Jacelyn Starks: The freshman guard paced the Crimson Pride offense, hitting 5-of-15 from the field, including two three-pointers. Her aggressive play resulted in 17 points, supplemented by 5 rebounds and 2 steals.
  • Abby Fleetwood: A cornerstone for IU Columbus, Fleetwood showcased her versatility with a hard-fought double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds while adding three blocks.
  • Tatum McFarland: McFarland contributed six points and played a key role in disrupting Brescia's perimeter shooters.

IU Columbus will hit the road for their next matchup, facing Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, on Wednesday (Jan. 8), another conference double-header. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM
