Women's Basketball Comes up Short Against SMWC

SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The IU Columbus women's basketball team showed determination and offensive balance but ultimately fell short to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, 93-78, on January 8, 2025, at the Jeanne Knoerle Sports and Recreation Center. Despite the final score, this was a tightly contested battle for much of the game, with the Crimson Pride keeping pace with their opponents through three quarters.

IU Columbus came out with energy, edging out a 21-19 lead in the first quarter. Amaya Collins and Abby Fleetwood paced the offense early with key buckets. However, the second quarter saw the Pomeroys exploit second-chance opportunities to keep things even. At halftime, the teams were locked at 36-36, setting the stage for an intense second half.

The third quarter proved pivotal as Saint Mary-of-the-Woods surged ahead with a 27-point quarter, taking advantage of rebounds and transition opportunities. The Crimson Pride fought valiantly, matching their opponents with 21 points in the fourth quarter, but couldn't overcome the deficit. The final score doesn't reflect just how close this contest was, with IU Columbus showing resilience against a tough opponent until late in the game.

Amaya Collins led the Crimson Pride with 20 points, hitting 6 of 12 shots, including two three-pointers, and hitting 6 of 7 from the charity stripe. Abby Fleetwood posted an impressive double-double, tallying 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists in an all-around stellar performance. Jacelyn Starks added 16 points and hit two of IU Columbus' seven three-pointers while maintaining perfect accuracy from the free-throw line. Cora Baker provided 12 points on efficient 6-for-9 shooting and added 6 rebounds in a strong interior presence.

The Crimson Pride shot a solid 51.8% from the field and 92.9% from the free-throw line, but rebounding was the story of the night. The Pomeroys dominated the glass with 44 total rebounds, including 25 offensive boards, which led to multiple second-chance points. IU Columbus also struggled to control possessions, committing 16 turnovers that were converted into fast-break opportunities by the home team.

The Crimson Pride will now look to regroup and prepare for their next challenge. With conference play in full swing, IU Columbus is determined to bounce back stronger. The Crimson Pride return to action Saturday, at IU Kokomo, for another men's-women's conference double-header. Tip-off is set for 3:00 PM.
