COLUMBUS, Ind. – The IU Columbus women's basketball team faced a tough challenge on Saturday afternoon, falling to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods 90-54 at Circle K Fieldhouse. Despite strong efforts from Jacelyn Starks and Amaya Collins, the Crimson Pride struggled to keep pace with the Pomeroys' relentless rebounding and balanced scoring attack.
The game started with IU Columbus battling to find offensive rhythm, shooting just 31.1% from the field and 24.1% from three-point range (7-of-29). Saint Mary-of-the-Woods capitalized on second-chance opportunities, winning the rebounding battle 58-32 and controlling the paint throughout the contest.
In the first half, the Pomeroys took control, leading 42-29 at halftime behind the strong play of Madison Fueger, who finished with 18 points and six rebounds. SMWC continued to extend its lead in the second half, outscoring IU Columbus 29-11 in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Jacelyn Starks led IU Columbus with 18 points, including 6-of-7 shooting from the free-throw line, while Amaya Collins contributed 15 points and four rebounds. Abby Fleetwood provided a strong presence on the floor as well, stuffing the stat sheet with eight points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and five steals.
A key factor in the game was turnovers, as IU Columbus committed 25 giveaways compared to SMWC's 14. The Pomeroys converted those turnovers into fast-break opportunities, keeping the Crimson Pride from finding a consistent offensive rhythm.
Despite the loss, Saturday was still a meaningful victory for IU Columbus, as the game served as a platform to honor and celebrate Black History Month. The event brought the community together, with an energetic crowd in attendance to support both the team and the special programming throughout the day.
"Today gave our players and our community an opportunity to celebrate the importance of education and leadership." said IU Columbus Athletic Director Zach McClellan. "Our hope is that the youth in attendance, who represent the future of Columbus, enjoyed an exciting day of basketball while being recognized for their achievements."
Assistant Athletic Director Matt McCarroll gave a special shoutout to student-athletes Amaya Collins and Jacelyn Starks for their efforts in speaking to students in the community. Throughout the day, they emphasized the importance of academics and staying true to oneself, leaving a lasting impact on those in attendance.
The team looks to make some adjustments and bounce back for Tuesday's contest. The Crimson Pride will face IU Kokomo at the Circle K Fieldhouse for their second to last game of the year. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM.
