SUMMERSVILLE, WV – The IU Columbus women's basketball team fought until the final buzzer but came up just short in a 68-62 loss to WVU Tech on Saturday afternoon at Summersville Arena and Convention Center. Despite leading after the first quarter and a strong performance from Abby Fleetwood, who recorded 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists, the Crimson Pride couldn't hold off a late push from the Golden Bears.
IU Columbus (2-21, 0-12) jumped out to a 16-11 lead after the first quarter, fueled by sharp three-point shooting from Amaya Collins and Jacelyn Starks. The game remained tight throughout, with IU Columbus taking a slim 35-32 lead into halftime. However, WVU Tech (2-21, 1-11) responded in the second half, outscoring the Crimson Pride 36-27 over the final two quarters to secure the victory.
The Crimson Pride struggled to capitalize on their opportunities at the free-throw line, shooting 61.5% (8-of-13), while WVU Tech overcame its own struggles from the charity stripe (53.8%) by dominating the boards with a 49-34 rebounding advantage. IU Columbus forced 20 turnovers and tallied 13 steals, with Collins leading the defensive effort with five takeaways.
WVU Tech was led by Kennedy Hancock and Liz Cadel, each scoring 16 points, while the Golden Bears' rebounding dominance played a key role in the outcome.
The Crimson Pride are back in action Tuesday (Feb. 11) for their last road contest of the season. IUC will look to face RSC foe, Brescia University. The Bearcats are 15-7 overall and 7-5 in conference. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM CST.
