COLUMBUS, Ind. – The IU Columbus baseball team showcased their offensive firepower and strong pitching in a dominant doubleheader sweep over UC-Clermont, on Tuesday March 4, winning both games 11-9 and 12-2 at home.
In the first game, IU Columbus came from behind after trailing 7-1 in the third inning to pull off an exciting 11-9 victory. The game was a back-and-forth affair, with UC-Clermont jumping out to a commanding lead early on. However, the IU Columbus offense exploded in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring a combined 9 runs to erase the deficit. The standout performer in this comeback was Carson McNulty, who homered and drove in two RBIs. Other key contributors included Wyatt Sutton, who doubled and drove in one, and Cyrus Robinson, who added two hits and one RBI. Jackson Gilcrest earned the win with a solid 3.0 innings of relief, while Jack VonDielingen closed the game with a save.
The second game was a dominant performance from start to finish, as IU Columbus cruised to a 12-2 victory. They jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead in the second inning, powered by a three-run homer from Cyrus Robinson and a pair of RBIs from Zander Vonch. The IU Columbus lineup continued to pour it on in the later innings, with Baylon Holmes and Zander Vonch each contributing multiple RBIs. The offense had 12 hits, and the team capitalized on a few defensive errors by UC-Clermont.
On the mound, Gavin Haltom was exceptional, striking out six batter in 6.0 innings and earning the win. Colten Reese worked the first inning to start the game, while only giving up one hit. IU Columbus made quick work of UC-Clermont, finishing off the game with a 12-2 victory.
With the two wins, IU Columbus moves to 4-10 on the season. They displayed balanced offense and strong pitching in both games, fine-tuning their strategy as they head into a conference match-up this coming weekend.
The Crimson Pride travel to WVU Tech for a Friday-Saturday three-game series. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
