Crimson Pride Split Conference Doubleheader with Brescia

COLUMBUS, Ind. — The IU Columbus Crimson Pride hosted the Brescia University Bearcats for their doubleheader on Friday afternoon, splitting the series with a tough 3-0 loss in the opener before rallying for a 6-3 victory in the nightcap.

Game 1: Brescia 3, IU Columbus 0

Despite outhitting their opponents 6-5, the Crimson Pride couldn't capitalize on their opportunities in a 3-0 shutout loss to open the day. Brescia did all their damage in the first inning, scoring three runs that proved to be enough behind Felicity Cunningham's complete-game shutout.

Izzy Johnson led the IUC offense with a pair of triples, while Mallory Shelton added a double. The Crimson Pride threatened multiple times but stranded eight runners in crucial situations throughout the contest. Erica Henry took the loss in the circle despite a solid performance, allowing just three earned runs while striking out six over seven complete innings.

Game 2: IU Columbus 6, Brescia 3

The Crimson Pride bounced back in the second game, using a decisive four-run fifth inning to secure a 6-3 victory and earn the split.

Sophomore Hannah Taylor paced the offense, going 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI. Izzy Johnson continued her hot hitting with a 2-for-3 performance that included a double and two RBIs.

After taking an early 2-0 lead through two innings, the Crimson Pride found themselves tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth. That's when the offense exploded for four runs, sparked by Lily Culp's RBI triple. Taylor followed with an RBI single before Johnson doubled home another run. Mallory Shelton capped the scoring with an RBI single of her own.

Justice Cash earned the complete-game victory in the circle for IUC, scattering nine hits while not issuing a walk. IUC's defense was sharper in game two, committing just one error after making two costly miscues in the opener.

Looking Ahead

The doubleheader split moves IU Columbus to 11-21 overall and 8-12 in conference as they inch closer to the end of the season. The Crimson Pride have a quick turnaround, playing again Saturday (Apr. 12) at home, against RSC foe Oakland City University. The first game is scheduled to start at 12:00 PM.
