KOKOMO, Ind. — The IU Columbus Crimson Pride baseball team faced a challenging weekend on the road, falling in all three games against the IU Kokomo Cougars in a conference series at Kokomo Municipal Stadium.
Game 1: IU Kokomo 5, IU Columbus 0
IU Columbus was shut out in the series opener, managing just three hits against IU Kokomo's Brett Huiner, who pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts. John Codner had two of the team's three hits. Caleb Richards pitched well for Columbus, allowing three runs over 6.2 innings, but IU Kokomo broke the game open with Jacob Medvescek's two-run homer in the eighth inning. Columbus couldn't capitalize on their few baserunners, with Will Lewis caught stealing in a key moment. IU Kokomo scored single runs in the first, second, and fourth innings before the eighth-inning homer sealed the game.
Game 2: IU Kokomo 9, IU Columbus 0
In the second game of Friday's doubleheader, IU Columbus was again shut out despite collecting five hits. Lucas Slager and Ethan Guire each had two hits, but Kokomo's Alec Murphy pitched seven scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. Defensive errors hurt Columbus, as they committed four miscues leading to three unearned runs. Gavin Smith homered for Kokomo in the first inning, giving them an early 2-0 lead. The game slipped away in the fifth inning when Kokomo scored five runs, three coming on Noah Wolf's two-run single and errors by Columbus. Gavin Haltom took the loss for Columbus, allowing eight runs over five innings.
Game 3: IU Kokomo 16, IU Columbus 6
The series finale saw IU Columbus finally get their offense going with six runs on nine hits, building a 6-4 lead through four innings. Lucas Slager had a perfect 3-for-3 day with two RBIs, while Tarron White and Wyatt Sutton each doubled and drove in runs. However, the lead was short-lived as Kokomo responded with four runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by Mason Janz's three-run homer. Columbus' pitching and defense unraveled in the seventh inning when Kokomo exploded for eight runs, including Gavin Smith's grand slam. The Cougars showed their speed with six stolen bases but committed five errors that contributed to their downfall. AJ Burkhalter earned the win for Kokomo with three scoreless innings of relief, striking out six Columbus batters.
Looking Ahead
The losses drop IU Columbus to 9-28 overall and 2-13 in conference play. The team will look to bounce back in their next series on the road at Shawnee State University. The three-game series starts Friday (Apr. 11) at 3:00 PM, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday (Apr. 12) starting at 12:00 PM.
