Jose Olivo is a passionate volleyball coach and mentor originally from Venezuela, whose journey in athletics began as a student-athlete at Tachira University. There, he played for the men’s team and later served as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s programs. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Production before moving to the United States to pursue new opportunities.
Jose began working at Cummins in 2006, eventually settling in Columbus, Indiana, in 2010. After joining local volleyball leagues and reigniting his love for the game, he returned to coaching when his youngest daughter began playing. Since then, he has coached at St. Bartholomew Catholic School, Central Middle School, and Columbus North High School, as well as with several club programs including Columbus Volleyball Academy, HAVOC, and The Academy Volleyball Club—where he’s coached teams that have competed nationally.
In 2022, Jose became the Head Coach of IU Columbus Women’s Volleyball, leading the Crimson Pride through their first two seasons. Under his leadership, the team improved from a 7–16 record in year one to 10–14 in year two, and he enters season three with a deeper, more experienced roster and high expectations.
Jose earned a second degree—a Bachelor of General Studies—from IUPUC (now IU Columbus) in 2013. He continues to work at Cummins and coach at The Academy, while living in Columbus with his wife Katherine and their four children. His greatest joy is spending time with his grandson, Kash Jeremiah.
Jose believes players perform best when they want to play for their coach, not when they have to. He emphasizes academics first and is committed to helping student-athletes earn their degrees while enjoying the sport they love.
